There a lot I love about chess. For me, one of the coolest things is all the different places you can play chess. It is really the only game you can play anywhere and everywhere.
The most typical place you can play chess is at home. Whether you like to play chess in the dining room, play chess in the living room, or play chess outside on a patch of grass, the home is a great place to play chess.
That being said, there are a variety of places you can play chess outside of the home. You can play chess at a coffee shop, where you can grab a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day.
You can play chess at the beach on a nice summer day and get a tan. You can play chess on an airplane to pass the time. You can play chess at the bookstore or play chess at the library in between finding your favorite books.
Everyone loves something different about chess. For me, the most amazing part of chess is how it is able to bring people together. Often times I have told my students that they would be amazed how many people all over the world (in the most random of places) play chess.
Whenever I travel, I always bring a small chess board with. I usually set the chess board whenever I have to wait, whether it be for a train, airplane, or some other event. Recently I traveled to Los Angeles and of course brought my handy travel chess board with.
Flying on an airplane can be very stressful. It is truly a test of patience to be able to sit still for 5 hours and we all try to make the time pass by fast. Sometimes we listen to music, sometimes we watch the TV, and sometimes we talk to a neighbor. Chess is one of the best ways to both pass the time and get to know the neighbor on the airplane.
I played the passenger next to me for almost 3 hours of chess! He was Persian and we talked about how chess was important in his culture, as well as how much of the common terminology we use in chess comes from Persian origins. He had not played chess for years, but still remembered how to play very well.
Time flew by and our airplane had landed in no time, thank you chess!
