World Chess Championship: Anand vs. Gelfand
The world chess championships are currently going on in Moscow. World champion Viswanthan Anand is battling with Israeli Chess Star Boris Gelfand. This is an intense battle over the chess board as these are the top two players in the world! If you want to take a look at their game, here is it.
A Russian Online Newspaper writes:
“Playing black for the second time in the match, Anand continued his faith in the Slav defense and yet again did not have much difficulty equalising.
It was a continuation of discussion in the second game of the match wherein Anand had gone for a fifth move surprise and yet again the World champion went for it, emphasising that it was not an opening gamble he had gone for in his first game as…”

Cool Chess Boards: Cold War Chess Chess
My cousin from Russia seems to be able to find me the coolest chess sets; this one is no exception. It is a colorful, wooden chess set made under the theme of the cold war. The cold war chess set is a collectors set and probably not the best to play on. Still, it is nice to keep around. As you can see each piece is designed with detail and is quite comical.

Superhero Chess Set
The Colorado Springs Chess Club sent me over pictures of this superhero chess set. This is a very cool chess set. This chess set has character divided in Marvel vs. DC comic teams for the comic book enthusiasts out there.

Skeleton Key Chess Set
This week’s unique chess set has a Halloween theme…being that October is the spookiest of all the months. The Chess set above is the Skeleton Key Chess Set, and for good reason. All of the pieces are keys and there are slots in the board for them to be inserted into with every move.
I was not able to find the artists deeper meaning behind the board; but was able to come up with a quote for this chess set: “Unlock a new possibility with every move.” This super cool chess set was designed by Dave Pickett.
Wobble Chess Set
For a while now I have been sharing cool chess sets, most of which are completely out of reach to the average consumer. This chess set is an exception, and very cool. The Wobble chess set costs around $250 and has a very unique design. All the chess pieces balance perfectly on the squares and wobble into position. I do not have this chess set, but I imagine it would be very neat.
Cool Chess Sets- High Octane Chess Set
Every player wants a chess board that is unique to them. People who love Star Wars will get a Star Wars themed chess set, people who like Lego will make a chess set out of Legos, and people who really like building cars will build a car parts themed chess set; which is what this is. Built by Rev Rods, this set is unique because of its use of car parts. You can find a list of which parts were used to build each specific piece as well a more pictures of this cool chess set here.
The World’s Most Expensive Chess Set
I love Chess, and if your reading this blog the assumption that you love chess too. But how much would spend on a nice chess board? Maybe $50, maybe $100, maybe $200. The world’s most expensive chess set is valued at over 9.8 Million Dollars. This is the Jewel Royale Chess Set which was created in Great Britain and commisioned by the Royale Jewel Company.
What makes this the most expensive chess set in the world? Well… its made of gold and platinum, it has diamonds, emeralds, rubies, pearls and sapphires. The king piece weighs 165.2 grams of 18 carat yellow gold and has a spiraling mid-section graced by 73 rubies and 146 diamonds.
Cool Chess Sets- Alice Chess Set
Wow! This is one of the coolest chess sets I have ever seen. What makes this chess set unique is not just that the chess pieces “disappear” when they are lifted off of the chess board, but that the artist who created it actually had a meaning for this. Long story short, with some creative thinking Yasmin Sethi, the artist who created this chess set, was able to make it so that when the pieces are off the board, they are indistinguishable. The meaning behind this is that a piece that is off the board, whether it is a Queen or Pawn, is the same… Insignificant! You should never waste time thinking about the pieces off the chess board and always focus on what is going on on the chess board. I would take some time to check out the details and more pictures of this chess set here.
Cool Chess Sets- Chess Set 4000-FM
This is a very cool chess set, it is 3d with a 2d appeal. It looks slick and makes sure that all the pieces are easily distinguishable. The pieces are made from soft calfskin leather and the board is made of pear-tree. The slots in the board hold the pieces perfectly to give the board a neat look whether you are starting the game or in the middle of the battle. Check out more about his board here.
